Situated on the floor of the world-famous Great Rift Valley, Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano that last erupted in the 1800s. Located just 90km from Nairobi, it is the perfect location for an adventurous day trip out of the Kenyan capital.
Requiring a modest level of physical fitness, the 4-5 hour hike takes you to the very rim of the volcano crater for a glimpse out across the Great Rift Valley. The early portion of your hike takes you through land inhabited by wildlife such as buffalo, antelope, and even leopards, while the higher reaches are steep and require a good level of determination.
How long is the Hike
The hike on mt Longonot takes between 3-5 hours depending on pace and fitness. The hike from gate to the crater rim is 3.1km in length but the height gain is rapid and this makes for a stiff climb. One can also decide to circumnavigate the crater rim which is a distance of 7.2km. The hiking trail is provided with some rest points but its narrow especially on the crater rim.
The total length of the hike up, around the crater rim and back is 10.3km through some narrow paths and treacherously steep inclines. You can climb with some packed lunch that you can have at the crater rim or descend to the base and go for a lunch at the Lake Naivasha restaurants.

A day trip to Lake Nakuru National park offers a well worth while wildlife experience. The park boasts a large population of Rhino, Lion, Giraffe, Buffalo, Leopard, Water buck as well as many other species of game. In addition the highlight of Lake Nakuru is its mass of Greater and Lessor Flamingo’s which can be found feeding in the shallows of the lake. Also one of the most promising park to see rhino and leopard This is a daily excursion safari.
What to Expect
Lake Nakuru, a small (it varies from 5 to 30 square kilometers) shallow alkaline lake on the edge of the town of Nakuru lies about 160 kilometers north of Nairobi. It can therefore be visited in a day tour from the capital or more likely as part of a circuit taking in the Masai Mara or Lake Baringo and east to Samburu. The lake is world famous as the location of the greatest bird spectacle on earth – myriads of fuschia pink flamingoes whose numbers are legion, often more than a million maybe two. The park now has more than 25 rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country, so the chances of spotting these survivors are good. There are also a number of Rothschild’s giraffe, again translocated for safety from western Kenya beginning in 1977. Waterbuck are very common and both the Kenya species are found here. Among the predators are lion and leopard, the latter being seen much more frequently in recent times.
